OPPOSING TIMARU
Cycling Cup Race
Two of the local cycling clubs’ purely domestic races. Avon’s Round-the-Bays and Papanui's Frank Grose Cup race against Timaru, will be held today. The Avon race customarily confined to club members, may include the former national champion and world championships rider, A. J. Ineson (Southland). Ineson is stopping over briefly in Christchurch with his family and if he wishes to race, Avon will oblige him. The course follows a very similar route to last Saturday's Round-the-Harbour race but there is no diversion to Diamond Harbour and, instead, the riders will continue on after Lyttelton to Linwood avenue via Evans Pass and Sumner.
Last year, T. J. Tabak was first and fastest in the race of about 40 miles but the record is one of the few he does not hold locally: P. Wood’s 1962 record is Ihr 50min 39sec.
