“No Reaction” To Protest
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON,
June 24.
The Vice - Chancellor of Victoria University, (Dr. J. Williams) said today he had “no reaction” to a vote of censure passed at the annual general meeting of the Victoria Students’ Association over the award of an honorary doctorate of laws to the Prime Minister, (Mr Holyoake).
Last night the association carried a motion of protest against the award by 57 votes to 10.
Dr. Williams said today that the students who passed the motion were entitled to their own opinions. It was claimed at the meeting that the award would be imprudent in an election year. Dr. Williams said it could be argued that it was imprudent to award any honorary degrees.
He declined to state why
the award had been made to Mr Holyoake but “he has been the Prime Minister for a long time.” “It’s a form of citation,” be said. Honorary degrees have been awarded by Victoria
University to Sir Walter Nash, Sir John Hott, Sir Ernest Marsden, Dr. F. J. Llewellyn, and the university’s librarian, Mr H. G. Miller. Mr Holyoake’s degree will be conferred at a public ceremony on July 5.
