N. I. Scott- On Wheels
A THIRD placing In the general classification of the three-day tour of the Thames district is the remarkable result of N. I. Scott’s two-month-old road cycling career. Scott took up cycling at the end of April to recover from persistent injuries which were hampering his long athletics career.
Notwithstanding his success Scott will return to the track next year, refreshed and—he thinks—recovered from the troublesome injuries. He said recently that “the smoothness of the leg motion in pedalling compared with the pounding they get while you run" was instrumental in clearing up these injuries. Scott thinks he will return to athletics “more of a fighter. Cycling is much tougher mentally than athletics—you have to hang on grimly to a group of cyclists for hour after hour sometimes,” he said.
Scott also thought that cyclists did not train as hard as athletes but raced harder during competition.
“It is more painful, and more prolonged, than in athletics.”
