Early Concrete Homes
Two old houses in Mon* treal street, on the east side between Cashel street street and Cambridge terrace, are being demolished. They are believed to be among the first houses built of concrete in Christchurch.
At one time they were used by Police officers and their wives. The firm which is demolishing the buildings, Jack Cameron Ltd., expects the job to last at least seven days. “They’re pretty solid. They really built to last in those days,” a spokesman said. Ma-
hogany fireplaces, and pine floors have all been removed. The site has been purchased by the Municipil Electricity Department and when it is clear it will be used as a temporary car park. In the not-too-distant future a small sub-station will be erected and later there may be further development.
