‘Roll-on Ferries Will Reduce Carriers’ Work’
A prediction that roll-on | ferries would reduce the; amount of work for smaller i carriers at Lyttelton was! made by Richard Paulsen, al director of the Governor’s Bay Transport Company Ltd.,! before the No. 9 Transport; Licensing Authority (Mr J. I S. Haywood) at a sitting yesterday. However, Paulsen, an objector, conceded to counsel for the applicant of an additional vehicle authority (Mr J. R. Woodward) that since the Lyttelton road tunnel had been opened, cartage work at the port had noticeably increased. The Authority adjourned the application of Stark Bros., Ltd., Lyttelton, for an amendment to a continuous goods service licence by the addition of one vehicle authority, until September 30. He also asked counsel to obtain a certified financial statement on the applicant’s present vehicle authority. The Authority said the adjournment would also enable him to see whether there would be any delayed impact from the British seamen’s strike on carriers at the port. Fears that the strike might affect smaller carriers were expressed to the Authority at a sitting on Tuesday by counsel for the Christchurch Road
and Transport Association (Mr J. A. Bretherton). The Authority overruled a decision made by the Transport Licensing Authority in 1948. The decision prevent'ed William Newton, of Christchurch (Mr R. J. de Goldi) from transferring a continuous passenger service licence. Hearing an application for transfer from Newton to John James Burrows, 13 Odie place, Christchurch, the Authority said he considered the original agreement was not part of the licence.
Counsel for Midlands Motorways Services Ltd. (Mr B. J. Drake) submitted that Newton had undertaken to give up the licence when he disposed of his business. The Authority said the evidence showed that the business was satisfactory. Normally, there was no objection to a man selling his business. The Authority granted an application by Lloyd lan Knowles, of Arthurs Pass, for a new continuous taxicab licence, with one private hire cab authority, to operate in s 60-mile radius from Arthurs Pass. John Winston Rees, 18 Moffett street, Christchurch, was successful when applying for an amendment for a continuous goods service licence, by the addition of one vehicle authority. A deletion from the description of class of goods carried of “licensees own” and “while working in conjunction with own plant and equipment in connexion with contracts” was allowed.
Granting an application for transfer of a continuous goods service licence from W. S. Alderson and Sons Ltd., Christchurch, to Glenmore Bricks Ltd., Christchurch, the Authority allowed an amendment extending the class of goods carried. The Authority granted the transfer of a continuous taxi service licence from Brian Stocker Greenslade, Christchurch, to Stanley Edgar Lawson, 544 Worcester street, Christchurch.
