Greater Interest In Alcoholism Urged
If society .did not show a greater interest in and acquire a greater knowledge of the heart-breaking degradation and problems that stemmed from the abuse of alcohol, then the efforts of those working on the problem would be stultified, the chairman of the Canterbury branch of the National Society on Alcoholism (Dr. E. B. Reilly) said in his report to the annual meeting. More than 150 persons had requested assistance or advice during the year and talks were given to senior pupils in secondary schools where there had been a certain maturity of thought on alcohol. Leaders in activities involving youth could often unwittingly condone deviations in conduct that could lead to the ultimate disaster of alcoholism, said Dr. Reilly. Restraint and good example exercised in the right place should be the watch-word in the Interest of young people.
There was still the almost insurmountable obstacle of the person who would not admit that he had a problem with alcohol and would not
[agree to discuss the matter with anyone, said Dr. Reilly. | Projected legislation pro[viding for the compulsory [treatment of alcoholism would have given the answer to the problem but although a great deal of preliminary work had been done the desired goal had not yet been reached, he said. With a cash balance of £l2B, the budget was still a small one and the establishment of anything such as a library of films and publications on alcoholism which was so badly needed, could not be contemplated, said Dr. Reilly. Officers were elected as follows:—Chairman, Dr. Reilly; deputy chairman, Brigadier F. W. Hay; committee, Mrs M. Bell, Messrs D. Barrett, T. E. Roff, L. W. Warren. W. F. Brown, M. G. L. Loughnan, and J. G. Hunter.
