LONDON. The county cricket champion. Worcestershire, strengthened its challenge to the current leader. Yorkshire, by convincingly beating Lancashire this week. Worcestershire is now 12 points behind Yorkshire with a match in hand.
Scores: ..... At Peterborough: Essex 136/9 and 85 (B Crump 4/21, P. Watts 4/11) lost to Northamptonshire 151 and 74/4. by six wickets. Northamptonshire 12 points. At Cardiff: Surrey 209 and 162/5 dec. beat Glamorgan 90 and S 3 (S. Storey 5/22). by 198 runs. Surrey 12 points. At Taunton Cambridge University 123 and 165 (K. Palmer 6/69) lost to Somerset 130 and 161/8, by two wickets. At Manchester: Lancashire 178/8 dec. and 115 lost to Worcestershire 91 and 203/4 (M. Horton 61), by six wickets. Worcestershire 10 points, Lancashire two.
At Portsmouth: Hampshire 189 and 169 drew with Leicestershire 133 and 156/4. Hampshire two points. At Birmingham: Gloucestershire 251/8 dec. and 192/4 dec. (R. Nicholls 69) beat Warwickshire 251 and 187 (J. Mortimore 4/48. D. Allen 4/50), by 5 runs. Gloucestershire 11 points, Warwickshire one.
At Nottingham: Mlddlaaai 270/4 dec. and 125/S dec. drew with Nottinghamthlre 174/8 dec. <n. Stewart S/U) and 174/4. Middlesex two points.
