Contribution Of Children
It was very encouraging to see the amount of work being done by New Zealand children to help others overseas, said the general secretary of the Y.W.C.A. (Mrs F. W. Gunz) yesterday. Mrs Gunz attended a World Fellowship luncheon recently where the work of overseas welfare organisations was discussed., About £3OOO was raised by Christchurch children for children and welfare organisations in Fiji, Jordan, Africa and Greece. The money came from bottle drives, poster and painting competitions, record evenings, displays and fashion parades.
“The children worked hard for every bit of it” said Mrs Gunz. “They even organised a progressive starvation dinner. This, however, was not nearly as gruesome as it sounds. In one house the children ate rice, in the next they ate soup, and in the next they drank water
“So often it is the older people who have to struggle to support our organisations and societies and this effort shown by the younger people is very pleasing,” said Mrs Gunz.
