Profiteering Denied
(N.Z. Prett Association) AUCKLAND, June 23. Suggestions that some merchants had increased prices for some steel in short supply as a result of the seamen’s strike were denied in Auckland today by the president of the Steel Merchants ’ Stockholders’ Association,
Mr L. C. Ryan. He said there was no substance to the suggestion. Steel was subject to price control, and only 25 per cent of the country’s steel requirements came from Britain. One Auckland businessman said today that there was “some evidence” that certain steel merchants were increasing prices to keep profits up in the face of the reduced quantities available.
