Likelihood Of Thant Going

GV.Z.P.A. Reuter — Copyright)

NEW YORK, June 23.

Fears grew today that U Thant may decide against serving a second term as United Nations SecretaryGeneral.

U Thant, who is aged 57, may make an announcement, one way or the other, any day. If he says “No” it will precipitate a United Nations crisis similar to that before he himself was chosen to succeed the late Mr Dag Hammarskjoeld in 1961. The impression many people at the United Nations have been receiving from U Thant is that he is fed up—frustrated in particular by his utter failure to influence either side in the Vietnam conflict to forsake arms for the conference table. Financial Problems He is frustrated also by the i United Nations’s financial difficulties, which have made

it incredibly difficult, if nol impossible, for the United Nations to discharge effectively its primary peace-keeping responsibility. Many observers think it now is up to the Soviet lead ers to persuade U Thant to stand again. President Johnson, President de Gaulle and Mr Wilson all have urged him to seek re-election.
