Six Die In Smash

HAWERA, June 23.
Six persons died when their car slithered beneath the tray of a truck travelling in the same direction on the highway near Manaia, seven miles west of Hawera today. .
Those killed were:— James Mervyn Day, aged 29, a fanner, of Ram road,
Manaia. ' Mrs Lois Audrey Day, aged 25, his wife, and their two sons, John Andrew Day, aged 3.
Michael James Day, aged 2
years. Mrs Lily Mickell, aged 56, married, the mother of nine children, of Matangi road, Hamilton.
The police are withholding the name of the sixth victim, a young woman who is believed to have arrived in Taranaki recently from South Australia to take a job as a land-girl. Three of the car’s passengers, including the driver,

were killed instantly, another died on the way to hospital, and the other two died later in hospital.
The truck is owned by the Ministry of Works. The car was wrecked, and the police and passing motorists had difficulty in extricating the dead and the injured.
