Building Materials ‘Earthquake’ Tests

The Auckland City Council Town-planning Committee today approved the use of a university property for the experiments. I The purpose of the experiments is to test the effect of earthquakes on a range of varying building materials. Earthquakes will be simulated by an oscillator which can be placed on each floor in turn. The test programme will be conducted by Mr R. M. Thompson, senior lecturer at the school, in association with Professor F. Woolard, professor of architectural construction. Professor Woolard said the programme was believed to
be the first of its kind in New Zealand. The committee approved the application, which will be for a two-year period, provided the university is responsible for any damage to private property.
