“Unfounded” Comments
Comments by the newlyelected president of the Quantity Surveyors’ Institute (Mr A. Dickson) alleging irregularity and conflict of interest on the assignment of the quantity surveyor for the town hall competition are not only in questionable taste but are unfounded, says the final report of the judges of the architectural competition.
A restriction in the rules applied to members of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, the judges say,
and this was recorded in writing to the Quantity Surveyors’ Institute before the press statement by Mr Dickson.
To avoid even the slightest adverse reaction from competitors the situation was fully covered in a letter to each competitor, and all said they had no objection to the quantity surveyor completing his assignment. “As the institute had written previously stating it had no wish to interfere in any way whatsoever and the writer had responded clarifying the position, the subsequent press comment is inexplicable,” says the report, which is signed by Mr R. C. Muston, professional adviser to the judges.
