HISTORY OF W.E.A.
Task For Tutor The manuscript of a jubilee history on the first 50 years of the New Zealand Workers’ Educational Association should be finished by the end of this year, according to the annual report of the association, which will be presented at the annual meeting in Christchurch next month. Mr L. F. de Berry, of Christchurch, a W.E.A. tutor for many years, has been commissioned to write the history.
Efforts are being made to establish a branch at the Manapouri power project. Several Nelson people have approached the association to start a branch there after the withdrawal of the Victoria University tutor. A comparative analysis of courses held over the last two years shows there has been an increase in the number of enrolments from 4801 in 1964, to 4910, last year. Effective attendances were up from 3822 in 1964 to 4484 last year. In the Canterbury district, enrolments rose to 2340 last year from 2275 in 1965. Effective attendances last year were up by 70 to 1971. These figures are the highest of any of the association’s six districts.
Included in the wide range of subjects taught are: art, literature, languages, music, psychology, sociology, philosophy, religion, science, social studies and a variety of others for discussion panels.
