26 Horses In One Flight
Twenty-six horses left Christchurch airport early yesterday afternoon on the first stages of their trip to the United States. The aircraft, a CL44 of the Flying Tiger Line under charter to the New York trainer, F. Mollica, arrived from Australia at 7.30 a.m. with eight horses on board. They were Stormy Bruce, In Law, Khufra, Traperbole, Cool, Kalama’s Peak, Mary Kathleen and Seldom Safe.
Mary Kathleen got down on the trip to New Zealand and Stormy Bruce had to be taken off the aircraft to allow her to be unloaded.
Loading operations started at 9.30 a.m. and they were finished in three hours, with Mary Kathleen being loaded last.
The New Zealand horses loaded were Soanga Boy, Bruce, Freestyle, Bede, Flying Look, Maggie Spangler, Caledonian Scott, Misty Prince, Paddy’s Day, Lady Charles, Le Whip, Main Reason, Flying Note, Gold Boa. Rekab, Solemn, Angelita and Seay Boy. All of them have been sold to American Interests in the last few weeks. A new type of stall was used to house the horses on board the aircraft The new stalls made loading much speedier than in the past and enabled more horses to be placed on board. The load of horses was by far the greatest to go from New Zealand in an aircraft.
