URE RIVER BRIDGE

Replacement Urged (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 22. The National Roads Board today was urged to give high priority to the replacement of the bridge over the Ure river. Three piers were washed away by floods last month. The bridge was later repaired. The South Island counties’ representative (Mr W. Beard) said North Canterbury residents wanted a new bridge. The chairman (the Minister of Works, Mr Allen) said the board would have to leave the matter to the District Roads Council, which would make recommendations. The board adopted standards for the marking of no-overtaking lines on twolane highways. ’ The chief highways engineer (Mr F. A. Langbein) said there had been a lack of uniformity in certain districts.

The proposed standards had been circulated to district commissioners and the Transport Department and a wide measure of agreement had been reached.
