ARTHUR’S PASS SEARCH.—A photograph of Mount Rolleston (7450ft from Otira Valley. “A” shows the area from where the voices of the missing climbers were heard at 1.50 p.m. On Tuesday. “B” shows the area where the climbers were last seen on Sunday. “C” is the site of the support rescue party bivouac at the head of the Otira slide, between the Romney ridge and the foot of the Otira face. “D” is the accepted climbing route, thought to have been taken by the missing climbers. “E” is the route planned by the eight-man high-climbing rescue team—up to the low peak from the summit of Romney ridge, a traverse from the low to middle peaks, and a lowering down the face from the middle peak about 600ft—to search an area of about a quarter of a mile across the face below the two peaks. The Philistine ridge runs north-east from Mount Rolleston to Mount Philistine (6400ft Two climbers who made the traverse from Rolleston to Philistine last Sunday were the last to see the missing men.
