Slack Time At Port
Many Lyttelton watersiders will be without jobs today,] although they will get attendance pay. Last evening the Tawanui, Holmburn, Pukeko and Holmdale were the only operational cargo vessels in port. Another small vessel, the Titoki, is in drydock. Yesterday morning there was a labour surplus of 297 and during the day three ,vessels —the Tjiliwong, Nottingham and Holmbrae—sailed. The arrival of the Pukeko made little impact because she has small labour requirements.
Today there will be an enormous labour surplus: the i only vessel expected is the ] inter-island steamer Hine- ] moa and the Tawanui, Holmburn and Holmdale are expected to sail The Pukeko may be the only operational cargo vessel at Lyttelton this evening. Prospects for the week-end
are brighter, however. The Cirrus, Rikke Skou, Cape Horn, Norman, Port Wyndham, Van Der Hagen and Kungaland are due. Next week the Port Auckland, Tasmania Star and, Hertford are due. Because these vessels are all sizeable overseas traders there should be a fair demand for labour. In addition there will be the normal coastal and intercolonial traffic.
