Milburn ’s Maiden 100 Leads England Rally

(N.Z.PA. Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. Maiden centuries by D. Holford (West Indies) and C. Milburn (England) highlighted the final day’s play in the second test at Lord’s yesterday.

But their efforts were in vain for the match ended in a draw. Milburn’s innings was the more timely, however, for England was in dire trouble with four wickets down for 67. It had been set to score 284 in 240 minutes after the West Indies declaration 40 minutes before lunch. He and T. W. Graveney were England’s salvation and

they were still together at the close of play when England had scored 197 for four. Milburn’s share was a masterly 126, which included three sixes and 17 fours in a stay of three hours. He and Graveney put on 130 in two hours. When stumps were drawn —the extra half hour was not claimed —England was 87 runs short of its target. There were wild scenes when Holford reached his

hundred. West Indian spectators, waving flags and banners, raced on to the pitch and hugged their hero. Sobers was unbeaten with 163 when he declared. His innings had lasted for five and a half hours and beat his 161 in the last test. The unbeaten sixth wicket stand produced 274 runs and beat the West Indies sixthwicket record of 211 by Gomez and Walcott at Lord’s in 1950. WEST INDIES First Innings .. 269 Second Innings C.
