PENSIONER COTTAGES

Preparing For Second Stage

The Christchurch Returned Services’ Association is investigating the possibility of starting the second stage of its cottage development programme in Pages road. According to the secretary of the association (Mr F. Barron) yesterday, the second stage involves the construction of a further four selfcontained flats for single men, will cost about £B5OO. Before any work begins finance will have to be raised. Mr Barron said Government subsidies were available towards the capital costs of pensioners’ cottages. “If things work out as we anticipate, work could begin by the end of this year,” he said. The first stage, costing about £B5OO, is expected to be completed next month. Two units containing four self-contained flats are being constructed. Eventually 19 single men's flats will be constructed at Pages road and the total capital cost is expected to be about £40,000 said Mr Barron.
