June 23 TROTTING MATCH.—A trotting match came off yesterday between Mr Gatherer's chesnut gelding Unknown and Mr Mirehouse’s brown horse Harkaway. The stakes were £5O, and the distance, from Mr Tompkin’s hotel. Ferry road, to Barrett’s hotel, Christchurch. The horses started from the Ferry road hotel at twelve o’clock, and for the first mile the race was a pretty equal one. Shortly after entering upon the second mile, however, Harkaway, in spite of all the

efforts of his rider, “broke” and the chesnut came in an easy winner. Both gentlemen rode with judgment, and Mr Gatherer handled the gelding cleverly. The course was fully four miles, and the distance was covered in something, under eleven minutes. We would suggest to gentlemen who go to see trotting matches, and ride their own hacks, that they should endeavor to let the racing horses keep the front Sportsmen always do. and many a trotting match has been lost and won in consequence of an inattention to this rule.
