LOCAL GOVT. COMMISSION
Councils’ Views
Sought
Views on the desirability of changes in the present provisions of the Local Government Commission Act, 1961, were requested from the Kaiapoi Borough Council last evening in a letter from the Municipal Association of New Zealand. The association wrote that a letter had been received from the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) saying the Government had decided'to approach all local authority associations whose members came under the jurisdiction of the Local Government Commission, the major departments concerned with the organisation of local government and the commission, to ascertain what changes they considered should be made in the Act There had been some criticism of procedures under the Act, said the letter. The commission set-up was too cumbersome and costly, said the Mayor (Mr H. 0. Hills). It was decided a subcommittee should forward the councils’ views.
