STUDENTS VISIT AVIEMORE
Third-year civil engineering' students of the University of Canterbury visited the site of the concrete dam of the Aviemore power scheme during the weekend. The 56 students were taking part in a field trip which considered geological aspects of the hydro-elec-tric development of the Waitaki river. The party was accompanied
I 'by Mr J. Hill, a lecturer in ' engineering geology at the : University of Canterbury, Dr. • W. Oldershaw, a lecturer in ; geology, Mr T. Dodd of the > Engineering School, Mr D. I Jones a senior technician in ■ the geology department, and ■ Mr G. Mansergh a member of s the New Zealand Geological Survey. Mr Mansergh explainI ' ed the geological problems in-
volved in further development of the upper Waitakl river. This is the first year such a special trip in engineering geology has been offered at the university. The trip was intended to show the students
the value of intensive geological investigation before major engineering projects. The picture shows progress on the Aviemore dam. Three of the 18 blocks now stand at the
finished height The hardboard sheets at the end of the structure help maintain a uniform temperature in the concrete which gives the finished dam greater strength.
