CARPARK AREA

New Brighton Land An application by two companies with shops in New Brighton to establish a carparking area in Mafeking and Union street was heard by the City Council’s town planning appeal panel yesterday. It was told that the companies would give the area, to the city. McKenzies (New Brighton), Ltd., and Self-Help Co-op., Ltd., for whom Mr B. J. Drake appeared, asked to be allowed to establish the park for 84 cars on an area of 88} perches at present zoned residential.

There was a general need for more parking facilities in the New Brighton shopping area, said Harald Bromley Kay, a property agent. The sections proposed for development as a car park were within the required proximity to the shopping area they would serve. The area would be an outright gift to the city as a car park, Mr Kay said when cross-examined by Mr R. L. Kerr, who appeared for residents of Mafeking, Beresford and Union streets who objected to the application. One of the five objectors who gave evidence, Mrs Annie Nuttall, said there appeared to be no need for an additional parking area. Such an area would tend to lower the value of homes next to it. Additional traffic problems would probably arise. Hector Maurice Buchanan said that if the council was to use the anticipated development money to establish car parks on the foreshore they would benefit both shoppers and citizens who wished to go to-the beach. John Alfred Nuttall said that other ear parks in New Brighton were used by young hooligans tor racing cars and motor-cycles, disturbing neighbours.

He complained that Mafeking street was dangerous for traffic, and Cr. W. P. Glue, chairman of the panel, said he would raise. the matter with the traffic committee to see if parking restrictions could be introduced. The panel also heard an application by C. R. Hawkins, lid, for permission to build

new factory premises in the Conference street bousing re(famatinn area. Mr J. R. Woodward, who appeared for the company, said that if it was forced to move it might be farced out of business.

Mr P. G. Hutchesson, for the City Council, objected on the ground that a factory would affect the prospects of redeveloping the area.

A resident of Conference street, Powel Kuzmiak, complained of a smoke and dust nuisance from the factory.
