Mt Egmont ‘Certain To Erupt Again’

(New Zealand Prest Associatton) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 21. It is little more than 200 years since Mount Egmont last erupted and the mountain will almost certainly erupt again with a series of explosions towards the west

These conclusions are drawn by Mr A. P. Druce, of the Botany Division, D.SJ.R, in an article in the latest issue of the “New Zealand Journal of Botany.” After reviewing previous recent eruptions of Egmont, in 1500, 1604, 1665 and about 1775, Mr Druce dealt extensively with his investigations before reaching bis conclusion. His dating is based on tree-

ring counts for the most part, but relative depths of later bedded peat were also used. Sources of error in treering dating and the prcbiems involved tn applying the method to the particular ash beds are discussed In detail.

“Each such eruption ta the past has produced a shower that has Masted and burnt vegetation for a distance of many miles from the crater,” he says.
