Sixpence A Week To Finance Farms
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 21. One hundred thousand young New Zealanders will help “Operation 21” establish five farms in the famine-stricken Kerala state, India. »
Announcing the project today, the national president of of “Operation 21," 'Mr B. Devenport, said the youth of the country will be asked to contribute to a “10 x 10" scheme, being launched in many areas this week. It calls for young people to give 10 per cent of their pocket money or earning over 10 weeks. Coin boxes—--100,000 of them—are being distributed to bodies and schools throughout New Zealand. The scheme is expected to raise at least £25,000, based on an average giving of 6d a week.
organise and supervise the project The farms of 25 acres, will be equipped with a small house, cow-shed, a well and water connexions, six cows and milking equipment and working capital for reclamation, fencing, grass, plant, and other contingencies. The farms will be formed into a co-operative society. Over the years, the young families established on the farms will pay some of their profits back into the co-opera-tive to set up more farms in the area.
To finance the project, the money will be channelled through the Freedom from Hunger Campaign to the Indian Social Institute Extension Service, which will
