Kaiapoi Centre Plans Explained To Council

Details of plans to raise funds for a new Kaiapoi community centre were given in a letter received by the Kaiapoi Borough Council at its meeting on Monday evening.

The Kaiapoi Community Centre organisation is being revived. It went into recess in June, 1964, when plans for a comprehensive civic centre were being considered. Copies of balance sheets, a brochure which will be sent to householders, and the organisation’s constitution were sent to the council with the letter, which said that 80 clubs and organisations in the town which were eligible to join. “It is good to see them get busy again,” said the Mayor (Mr H. O. Hills).

Removal of Trees.—There were many pane trees in the Kadraki reserve suitable only for firewood, and he suggested that the council employ two or three men to cut them up, so the area could be replanted next year, said a report- by the borough foreman (Mr G. Gilbert).

Forty-six birch trees had been planted in Darnley square, and weeping willows had been planted on the river bank. The works committee report recommended approval for the

removal of the pines at Kai rakl.

Building Replacement. A letter from the Local Authorities Loans Board said the council, would probably require special legislation to empower it to borrow money to build a replacement for Hansen's buildings. When this had been obtained, it would be necessary to obtain the sanction of the loans board. At present, the board did not generally regard the erection of commercial or municipal buildings of sufficient priority to justify sanction, the letter said, but only by applying could the board's decision be obtained. The letter should not be construed as advising against application for sanction to raise a loan, it said.

Voltag. Lower.—Since the New Zealand Electricity Department had made alterations to the sub-station at Southbrook, the power voltage in Kaiapoi had been 3.6 per cent below normal, the electrical engineer (Mr M. G. Ruddenfclau) reported. Negotiations to have the voltage raised were being made. More Power Bought.—There had been a 9.3 per cent increase in the amount of electricity purchased during May, the electrical engineer (Mr M. G. Ruddenklau) reported. The peak load occurred at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 23. Board Nomination. —A letter agreeing to the nomination of Cr. R. Monk for a vacancy oh the North Canterbury Catchment Board was received from the Ranglora Borough Council. Raffle Tickets.—Permission was given for the Kaiapoi Swimming Pool Improvement Fund committee to sell raffle tickets in the town each Friday between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Building Permits. Sixteen building permits to a value of £6038 were issued during May, the council was told.

Overgrown Hedges.—lt was decided to prepare a list of hedges which were obstructing footpaths or were likely to cause danger to traffic.
