ST. BEDE’S AND ST. KEVIN’S DRAW

St Bedes College and St. Kevin’s College (Oamaru) drew 16-all after a spirited struggle In their annual Rugby match yesterday. St. Kevin’s made the most use of excellent backs, with bright, deceptive movements. By using a forward to throw the ball Into line-outs, St. Bede's was able to use both wings In the line, but the ball seldom went past the centre or first wing, and the advantage was usually wasted. Neither side showed any lasting inclination to tackle low, and once a player gained momentum he was able to break through with ease.

The scores were level four times and the lead changed three times. St. Bede s led 11-8 at half-time. G W Diedrichs, C. Day, and j C Sutherland scored tries for St. Bede’s. A. P. , Jo " c ? converted two tries and kicked a penalty goal. Points for St. Kevin’s came from tries by A. Boyle (two). P. McClintock, and K Inder, and conversions by p McNamee and P. Langford. The teams were:—

St. Kevin’s.— S. Murphy; P. McClintock, P McNamee L. Boyle; T Bovle, P. Langford; J. Dee, D. Boyle; K. Inder, D. Rose,

T. Cairns. A. Ryan; L. Templeton, P. O’Donnell, D. Adams. St. Bede’s.— R. J. Cavanagh; J. B. McDermott, G. J. Donaldson. R. C. Berry; G. T. Brady, C. D. Day: A. P. Jones (captain); B. R. Kelly; G. W. Diedrichs, V. E. Stewart, B. J. Lyons. J. N. Marinovic: D. E. Lindstrom. K. A. Cowan (vicecaptain), J. C. Sutherland. Most impressive were the St. Kevin’s Inside backs. Langford and A. Boyle. Langford, a tiny player who was elusive and clever, preferred passing to kicking. Outside him, Boyle was the perfect foil. He was always a threat to St. Bede's often straggly defence, used his considerable weight to advantage, and ran with determination. He missed a third try by inches. The St Kevin's flanker, Ryan, constantly harried the St. Bede’s half-back, Jones, who was less effective in the second spell after a couple of hard knocks.

V. E. Stewart and B. J. Lyons, the St. Bede's locks, used their height in line-outs, but their opposites. Rose and Cairns, lost little in comparison. The two hookers, O'Donnell (St. Kevin’s) and Cowan, did well.

Referee: Mr A. G. Duckmanton.
