Cousins Save W. Indies In Unbeaten Stand

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. A magnificent unbeaten sixth-wicket stand of 193 between G. S. Sobers and D. Holford helped the West Indies to reach 288 for five on the fourth day of the second test against England at Lord’s.

The West Indies, who trailed by 86 on the first innings, started the day at 18 for one and suffered some early shocks, losing two wickets with only seven runs added.

Sobers was unbeaten with 121 at the close, and Holford was on 71. The West Indies enter the last day with a lead of 202.

Shortly before lunch the touring team was struggling with five wickets down and its lead only nine runs.

But Sobers, playing a fine captain’s innings, and with his cousin, Holford, completely altered the whole picture of the game. Sobers was rewarded for his masterly innings when he reached his century after 208 minutes. This was the forty-

seventh test century of his career and is a record for a West Indian batsman. Holford, who started cautiously, gradually gained his confidence and his partnership with Sobers flourished to kill England’s hopes of a quick finish.

Sobers offered only one chance and was dropped by M. C. Cowdrey when he was 93.
