City Council News In Brief

A grant of £5OO a year for the next three years for the second Pan Pacific Arts Festival planned for March, 1968, was approved by the Christchurch City Council on Monday evening. Third Lane.—The use of a third lane at the Cranford street vehicle-testing station for inspecting previouslyrejected vehicles should result in a quicker turn-over, minimise delays, and encourage use of the station, the traffic committee reported. Only two of the three lanes had been used so far and delays had been caused. It was felt that motorists were avoiding the station because of this, and a heavy burden was placed on the Lichfield street station.

Athletics Appeal.—A grant of £2OO was made to the Canterbury Amateur Sports Federation’s appeal to assist two' category B athletes to go to the Commonwealth and Empire Games in Jamaica. Freight Building.—A tender of £21,347 by the Fletcher Construction Company, Ltd., was accepted for the airport freight building, subject to approval by the Department of Civil Aviation. Fire Board.—Crs. W. E. Olds and N. G. Pickering were appointed to represent the council at a meeting with the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) and representatives of surrounding local bodies to discuss represeqta-

tion on the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board. The meeting will be on August 27. Games Delegation.—To assist the delegation going to Jamaica to present Christchurch’s case to hold the 1970 Commonwealth and Empire Games, the council granted £5OO. More Rabbit*.—The rabbit population was high in the Chaneys area of the council’s plantations, the parks and recreation committee reported. The council agreed that the Plains Rabbit Board should be paid for the cost of destruction. Town Hall.—Approval was given to a suggestion that a small plaque on the back of seats in the town hall should give the names of donors of £lOO or more to the town hall funds. Taxi-drivers* Dress.—The

council agreed with the traffic committee that taxi-driv-ers should wear ties at all times, and it will support this view at a hearing of the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority when there will be an application for drivers to wear blue or gold ties with a white shirt, with a dispensation that ties be removed during hot weather. Airport TV.—Closed circuit television was approved for I the airport. The National j Airways Corporation was ap parently adamant that it would not contribute to the scheme, favouring its own scheme, although the schemes were different and would fill different needs, the airport committee said. The council could put the scheme in as a bonus aid to the terminal in the hope that users would cooperate after they had seen its effectiveness.
