‘Shilling Not Needed’

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 21. There is no longer any necessity for retaining “one shilling” in the design for the 10 cent coin in the country’s decimal currency, according to the president of the Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand (Mr B. G. Hamlin).

Mr Hamlin wants to see the deletion made quickly before the coin is made in its present style by the Royal Mint Mr Hamlin said today that while he recognised the original idea of using “one shilling” on the 10c, the basic unit of the 1967 money, was to help the public in adjusting from the old to the new, the purpose no longer applied. “I fee) that people now realise that keeping ‘one shilling* will only cause considerable confusion,” he said.

Mr Hamlin added that he had heard a number of complaints on the same issue.
