The Railways
Sir,— May I congratulate Mr Lascelles for another fine presentation of modern trends in British Railways? Overseas railways put ours to shame as regards passenger travel. Our latest passenger rolling stock (excluding railcars) was built before the Second World War, and there are no plans at present for replacement. Although I can see the need for expenditure on goods waggons, diesel locomotives and an inter-island ferry, I would like to know why not a penny of the recent £l5 million loan from the World Bank was spent on improving pasenger travelling conditions. —Yours, etc., ON THE RAILS. June 19, 1966.
