Midwinter

Sir, —It was stated in “Random Reminder” in this morning’s issue that Tuesday, June 21, is the shortest day, or midwinter day. According to the British Astronomical Association, midwinter this year is at 8.33 p.m. on June 21 (Greenwich Mean Time). Midwinter, being the moment when the sun crosses the sixth hour of Right Ascension, is the same moment throughout the world; thus midwinter for us is 9.03 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22 (New Zealand Standard Time). Therefore, Wednesday is the shortest day, not Tuesday.—Yours, etc., W.J.L. June 20, 1966.
