Overseas Investment
Sir,—There seems a certain amount of opposition to the American proposal to buy 62,000 acres of waste land between Taupo and the Mohaka river and develop it. I travelled through that area a few years ago, and Pember Reeves’s lines seemed to describe it: “Not a blade of kindly grass or e’en a weed to grace the mass was seen to grow.” If these Americans wish to develop it and the Maoris to sell, then let both parties fulfil their desires. I know of better land within 50 miles of Christchurch, which Owing to its being gorseinfested, was given free of charge to an adjoining landowner and the transfer dues being paid by the donor. There is far more harm being done every day to the economy of New Zealand by extending building areas over some of our mqst fertile land with scarcely a protest from the public.—Yours, etc., E.R. June 20, 1966.
