LOST CAR KEYS

40 Tags A Week Returned Lost car-key tags were still being returned to the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society at the rate of more than 40 a week, said the general secretary of the society (Mr R. G. Mathews). The tags had been returned from Germany, the United Kingdom. South Africa, and Australia.

Two years ago Caltex Oil (N.Z.) Ltd., met the cost of manufacturing 1,500,000 tags and recently a cheque for £lOOO, the company’s final contribution, was handed to the society. As a result of the scheme more than £15,000 in donations had been received by the society, said Mr Mathews. Some car owners were still sending in donations ranging from 10s to £5.

The president of the society (Dr. D. M. G. Beasley, of Whangarei), said the society had received thousands of keys and returned them to their owners. There were bulk files containing letters of thanks and the service was obviously appreciated. He said the cost of operating the society’s homes, schools, and services exceeded £BO,OOO a year. Homes under construction during the next two years would cost more than £400,000, and even after a Government subsidy more than £300,000 would have to be found and the society was most grateful for all donations.
