COMPARISONS
How will the new rates affect ratepayers? That was the question Cr. H. P. Smith, chairman of the finance committee of the City Council, said last evening everyone would want to know. To answer it, he gave some examples. They were: An old house in the central area that carried rates of £3O 14s 4d last year would have to meet £33 16s 7d this year. Of the increase of £3 2s 3d, the City Council would receive £1 10s lid, the Drainage Board £1 12s 2d A home in Linwood in the old sewerage area that paid £2B 14s last year would pay £32 8s 7d—lBs Id extra to the council and £2 17s 6d extra to the Drainage Board. A home in Papanui in the new sewerage area would have to pay an increase of £1 Is Id on last year’s rates of £39 Ils Id. The council would receive £1 7s 8d more, the Transport Board lid less, the Catchment Board 4d less and ’.'the Drainage Board 5s 4d less. A Sumner house that had rates of £22 2s 7d last year would have to meet another £5 14s. The council would get an extra £1 Is lid, the Drainage Board another £4 12s lOd.
A Walnonl road residence that paid £33 19s 3d last year would have an increase of 9s 6d. The council would receive 16s 8d extra, the Drainage Board 6s less. A Sandown crescent house that paid £3l 6s lid last year would have an increase of 8s 2d. The council would receive an extra 15s, the Drainage Board 5s 7d less. In Hoon Hay, a Waipara street property rated at £33 Is Id last year would have to meet an extra 12s 2d. The council would receive 18s 9d more, the Drainage Board 5s 4d less.
A central city departmental store with a high capital and a high unimproved value would have to pay £7386 in rates this year, compared with £6640 last year. The would receive £324 more, the Drainage Board £432 more, the Transport Board £6 Ils less and the Catchment Board £4 less. Another central store, but one with a high capital rnd low unimproved value, would have to pay an increase of £447, making its rates £3381. The council would receive an extra £B3 10s 3d, the Drainage Board an extra £370 5s 4d.
