Upset In Men’s Basketball

The promising High School Old Boys side suffered an unexpected defeat when it met University B in the eleventh round of the Canterbury inter-club men’s basketball competition on Saturday.

It still retains its third position in the competition although its chances of catching the leaders, Unlverjity A and Y.M.C.A., have now disappeared. The win moved University B past Bumham into fourth place. The outcome of the other two games were much as expected. Results:— University ■ 40, Old Boy* 33. University A 45, Rax 22. Y.H.C.A. M, Y-Boys 19. Points:—University A 18, Y.M.C.A. 17, Old Boy* 12, University B 9, Burnham 8, Rex 2, Y-Boys 0. SMITH OUTSTANDING UNIVERSITY B 40: W. E. Smith 23, D. de Lisle 6, B. Strong 5, J. Riley 4. OLD BOYS 35: M. Gleason 10, A. Hounsell 3, G. Orchard 6, K. Milligan 5, R. Milligan 4, P. Bell 2. The University B coach (Mr A. Forrester) bad much to be pleased about in the performance of hi* team against Old Boys, although it is very doubtful whether the outcome would have been the same If Smith had not displayed such outstanding form. The rest of the team played well enough but they were very much dependent on him to set them up on offensive.

There was not a great deal between the teams—for much of the match the result could have gone either way. However, University B always had a slight edge. In the dosing stages fouls presented Old Boys with several opportunities to draw ahead. However, their shot* were strangely off target. A. Hounsell, normally accurate from the top of the keyhole, missed six free shots in succession at a vital stage of the game. His general play was also much more subdued than ueual. M. Gleason made good use of his opportunities and showed better form than many players of far more experience. The game was, nevertheless, a particularly entertaining struggle between two very evenly matched teams. University B led 21-17 at half-time.

REX STRUGGLING UNIVERSITY A 45: P. Stigley 14, J. Stead 10, M. Askew 9, Siong 8. G. Wllams 5, B. Nunns 1.

REX 22; N. Saunders 10, J. tieBvoy 4, P. Ward 4, D. Verey 2, P. Fox 2.

University's top team soon had Rex struggling to stay tn the game and when it led Dy 22 points to 8 at half-time a crushing defeat seemed inevitable. However, in the seeond spell, the Rex players showed greater Initiative and although they were handsomely beaten they managed to keep the score to reasonable proportions. The game was notable for the return to A grade competition of the veteran player, P. Fox, a former Canterbury representative. Bls play was reasonably sound but he wa« not the spearhead which Rex so badly lacks. N. Saunders was again the most prominent Rex player, guarding well and making the most of his opportunities. For University A, P. Stigley stood out as a most impressive player, using his considerable height to advantage. G. Williams, M. Askew and J. Stead were also very competent Intheir various specialist department*. Y-BOTS OUTCLASSED Y.M.C.A. 44: R. Entwistle 22, D. Rattray 18, C. Walton 12, P. Ross 6, A. Riley 4, M. Clements 2. Y-DOYS 19: K. Ewtngs 8, R. Dew 4, R. Ingram 3, B. Kelly 2, T. Reece 2, B. Skinner 2. Y-Boys took another unsteady step towards the wooden spoon when It suffered a substantial defeat at the hands of the talented Y.M.C.A. team. Its defence

was particularly weak and It failed to drive for the basket when the opportunities to score presented themselves. But for all that it was a slight improvement on when it last met Y.M.C.A. and scored only eight points. The team suffered a set-back early in the game when N. Vincent, one of its more experienced players had to leave the court with a twisted ankle.

Y.M.C.A. balanced Its play well and did not relax its defence even when It was obvious that it was going to win by a substantial margin. Entwistle, Rattray and Walton had a scoring field day, netting 50 points between them with some impressive shooting.
