MRS L. O. HAYMAN
Mrs Lillian Olivia de Carteret Hayman died at Umaru this week She was 76. For 22 years, Mrs Hayman taught at Tasman Downs School, which she started in 1923 for the benefit of problem children and children suffering from respiratory complaints. The Hayman family took over Tasman Downs, at the north of Lake Pukaki, early this century, and the highcountry station is still being worked by Mrs Hayman's only son, Mr J. B. Hayman. A school inspector suggested to Mrs Hayman that she should start a school at the isolated station. It was set up in a storeroom, between a chaff house and stable, and flourished there for 15 years. In 1938 the Education Board had a prefabricated building erected ami classes were held there until >1945.
