Disturbed Children
Sir,—The cry of J. F. Williams is not the first I have heard on this subject. Admittedly he has the intelligence and the will, but he lacks the most important ingredient: power. I have heard headmasters say, “All I want is to get this child out of my school.” This is a reasonable attitude for an educationist, for, under the present set-up, the problem is a medical one, but our medical services have lost the game by default. J. F. Williams should appeal directly to the Minister of Health. Mr McKay has the power, and I believe he can be nudged into using it. The reduction of mental illness is an economic necessity, and the rehabilitation of the disturbed child is the certain key.— Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. June 19, 1966.
