FIGHTING CHARLIE
Ascot Gold Cup (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ASCOT. Fighting Charlie, owned by Lady Main Bury, was a popular winner of the Gold Cup, the premier event at the Royal Ascot meeting on Thursday. Favourite in a field of eight runners, Fighting Charlie, brilliantly ridden by Greville Starkey, won by eight lengths to record his second successive victory in the race. Lester Piggot, who rode the horse to victory last year, declined the mount on this occasion in prefernce to Aegean Blue, which finished fourth.
Fighting Charlie beat Lady Sasson’s Biomydrin (Scobie Breasley) comfortably in the two miles and a half race. Mintmaster (J. Sime) finished third a head behind Biomydrin.
Fighting Charlie is the first stayer to win the Gold Cup in successive years since Trimdon in 1931 and 1932. Only three other horses have won the cup twice this century. The race was worth £10,355 to the winner.
