Petrol Deliveries May Stop Again
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 17. The secretary of the Northern Drivers’ Union (Mr G. H. Andersen) said today that deliveries of petrol and oil in the Auckland district could be disrupted again next week.
He said it appeared that the oil companies were not prepared to accept an undertaking by the drivers involved
in the dispute over wages and conditions that they would work a nine-hour day Monday to Friday. The union knew that some companies were delivering supplies of oil through other than the accepted avenues. This could provoke a stoppage.
“The companies are endeavouring to shift the balance of the dispute and should meet us now to discuss a basis for later negotiations,” he said. Unsuccessful attempts had been made to carry oil/ by rail to some plants, Mr Anderson said. Railwaymen were refusing to handle materials not normally shifted.
The drivers will hold another meeting next week.
