WOMAN SHOT IN HEAD

Husband On Remand On a charge of attempting yesterday to murder his wife, Amelia Sybil Bremner, James Andrew Bremner, aged 62, a commercial cleaner, who appeared in the Magistrate’s Court later in the day, was remanded until July 14 for observation. Bremner’s counsel, Mr M. F. Hobbs, asked Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., for a remand for one week. Detective-Sergeant D. Porteous said a longer period for observation would seem desirable. Bremner was remanded for a month but is to be called earlier if a report becomes available. Mrs Bremner, aged 70, of 173 Hills road, was found in her bed at 2.30 a.m. yesterday with a .22 bullet wound in the head. She was flown to the Dunedin Hospital yesterday afternoon for a brain operation. Mrs Bremner was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital early yesterday morning. Her condition was later reported to be poor and deteriorating. The Press Association says that Mrs Bremner was gravely ill in the Dunedin Hospital last evening.
