Inter-City Telegraph
Sixty-six years ago the officer in charge of the telegraph branch was asked about the prospects of regular telegraph connexion with Wellington and the north, and replied: “That will be a big job and an expensive one, but I should not be at
all surprised if communication were established between Christchurch and Dunedin.” A continuous service between the two islands began in April, 1926, after a submarine cable specially designed for speech transmission had been laid.
