Tanker Drivers Ban Overtime
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 15.
Auckland petrol-tanker drivers have decided to restrict overtime and they will not deliver at week-ends.
This latest move in their dispute with the oil companies over demands for better wages, conditions and fringe benefits, was disclosed today. The overtime ban will begin tomorrow and overtime will be limited to five hours a week. The drivers will work a nine-hour day from Monday to Friday. The employers’ advocate in the dispute, Mr W. R. Thompson, was not available today for comment on the drivers’ latest action. Mr G. H. Anderson, secretary of the Northern Drivers’ Union, said the overtime limit would have a “restricting effect” on deliveries. The union's decision to work on a restricted basis was a reversal of the assurance given by Mr Andersen,
an oil company official said tonight. In spite of this the companies would do their best to maintain supplies to all petroleum users, he said.
