TELEVISION IN THE LORDS
(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, June 16. The House of Lords voted last night in favour of having some of its debates televised, in spite of fears by one peer that the Upper Chamber might look like a zoo. Action will not immedilately follow the 56-31 vote to
support experimental broadcasts. Baroness Gaitskell, I widow of the Labour leader, Mr Hugh Gaitskell, said tele- ' vision could provide instant ■ dramatisation for political ■ debate in a way newspapers . could not. But others thought televis1 ing debates would turn peers and peeresses into actors and demagogs, and cheapen a
serious assembly. Lord Balfour of Inchyre, a Conservative, feared they would be looked at “rather as at a zoo.” The only proceedings so far televised have been the opening of Parliament, with the Queen reading the Speech from the Throne in the Lords, and members being summoned from the House of Commons to hear it
