£60,000 Paid For Industrial Site
More than £60,000 has been paid by A. R. Harris and Company, Ltd., electrical engineer manufacturer and importer, for a four-acre industrial site on Blenheim road for future expansion.
The site, with some 20,000 sq ft of existing buildings, was bought from United Empire Box Company, Ltd. The price paid was for all facilities, including two houses, an old mill building and two other factory buildings. The old mill building was used by Tinus Box Company, a subsidiary of U.E.B. A senior executive of A. R. Harris yesterday said that his company would move its manufacturing warehouses and eventually its offices, out to the Blenheim road site, which was near the Middleton road intersection. Later, he said, his firm would sell its large twostorey property at the corner of Manchester and St. Asaph streets. A. R. Harris and company, Ltd., had in 1943
moved to the 52-perch Manchester street site, part of which was the old Christchurch polytechnic. The company executive said that the move to Blenheim road would start immediately. But the whole move might take two or three years He said that ultimately new offices and warehouses would be built at Blenheim road. Ihc move by the company to Blenheim road would be the third major move of the company in Christchurch in 50 years. Most people associated the company in the early days with the 3YA building in Gloucester street which it once owned.
Asked why A. R. Harris and Company, Ltd., was moving to Blenheim road, the executive said: “What has influenced us mainly is the trend in the United States and in the United Kingdom for companies, particularly in the manufacturing field, to move out to urban areas. “We want to have a few trees around the place. We are also interested in good access and plenty of space for client and staff parking.” he said.
