FINAL STAGE OF CABLE
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, June 14. Work on the final stage of the South-east Asia Commonwealth telephone cable—Seacom—started over the weekend, when the cable-ship Monarch began laying part of the 1626-mile section between Madang, North Borneo and Cairns, Australia.
Announcing this in London, Cable and Wireless, Ltd, said that the Retriever, a cable and wireless repair ship, was buoying the route ahead of the cable laying which was expected to take 10 days to complete. The Retriever also laid the shore ends at Madang and Cairns in February. The Mercury is due at Greenwich, London, at the beginning erf July to load cable to complete the section to Madang. Seacom, scheduled to become operational in 1967, will link Singapore, Jesselton and Hong Kong via the existing Pacific and Atlantic telephone cable network to London.
