PROTEST VOYAGE IN AUSTRALIA the Committee Against Atomic Tests (C.A.A.T.) was formed last year. Its purpose is to protest against all nuclear testing but in particular to find non-violent ways to persuade the French not to test atomic and hydrogen bombs in the South Pacific. Plans are well advanced for a boat manned by volunteers to sail Into the testing area. There its presence will announce to the world “Testing of hydrogen bombs is immoral and must stop.” The ship will also challenge the French action in closing off vast areas of the ocean to all travel; the high seas have traditionally been free to all. An international crew will man the ship. Among* those who have volunteered are a Belgian/French Quaker, a Ceylonese Buddhist monk, an Australian/ American journalist, a Canadian anthropologist, Australian master mariner and seamen, and possibly a volunteer from New Zealand. A thirty-seven foot ketch accommodating six crew members has been selected and a large portion of the purchase price has been raised. The ketch will cost sAll,ooo (about £4500 in New Zealand), and there will be additional expenses for supplies, a powerful two-way radio and navigational equipment. The Christchurch Committee of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament has decided to establish a Trust Fund for C.A.A.T. donations towards the expenses of this protest voyage. Receipts will be given for all donations. If for some reason the project fails, your money will be returned. Even if the protest ship is not able to postpone or stop the French, it will arouse world opinion and help to prevent future tests. It will serve as a powerful declaration to other nations who are considering the acquisition of nuclear weapons that world opinion no longer will support such acts. STOPPING NUCLEAR TESTING IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY. The Christchurch Branch of C.N.D. is authorised by C.A.A.T. to accept names of volunteers for the voyage. Telephone W. Rushbrook, 897-157 and your donation will be called for and a receipt given. Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament Secretary: Mrs R. Plumridge, 307 Madras street, Christchurch. 8386
