MINI-SKIRTS AT ASCOT
Some In Royal Enclosure (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) LONDON, June 15.
The thigh-high skirt made its first appearance at Royal Ascot yesterday—and appeared to be a winner. . A few of the short-shorts even got into the august Royal enclosure. Elegant race-goers ranging from society matrons to teenage typists bared their knees in more or less daring versions of London's “mini-skirt'’ look.
In the fashion stakes Lady Lowson, wife of London’s former Lord Mayor, led normally staid society dressers in an all-white coat and dress which was chopped off above the knee. At the other end of the social scale, a 16-year-old art student, Janice Dyckes, wore a ruffled collared black silk coat which ended more than three inches above the knee. She topped the outfit with a conventional Ascot cartwheel hat, home-made from black straw and silk flowers.
The Queen’s Ascot outfit was a jade green coat over a white silk dress. It ended beneath her knees.
