Roche Expects Run To End

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. Winner of two hard courts titles, the 21-year-old Australian, A. Roche, thinks he is riding for a fall and would not be surprised if R. Taylor (Britain) caused it today.

Roche meets the Yorkshireman for a place in the quarterfinals of the men’s singles in the London tennis championships at the Queen’s Club.

Taylor has had two tough matches on his way through to the last 16. He beat Beust (France), 11-9, 6-4, and yesterday defeated I. Buding (Germany), 9-7, 4-6, 9-7. The left-handed Taylor has one of the most powerful and deadly serves in mein’s tennis today and Roche is wary of it. . Seeding Surprise Surprised at his number two seeding at Wimbledon, announced on Monday, the Australian was apprehensive about his chances. Agreeing that he has had a good run so far, with the Italian and French titles to his credit, Roche said: “I’m riding for a fall.” He was keenly interested in the outcome of the TaylorBuding match and later said: “Taylor’s got a wicked service. You just can’t get near it.” Yesterday Roche and R. Emerson, who is seeded one at Wimbledon, were the only Australians to survive the third round. All Successful

Stolle (seeded three at Wimbledon) went down to P. Lail, of India, 64, 6-1. Stolle had earlier played a tough three-setter with an American, J. McManus, winning 4-6, 64, 6-2. It was another fine victory for the 25-year-old Lail, who last week beat the Australian, K. Fletcher, and the brilliant Spanish player, M. Santana, on the way to the final of the Kent championships. J. Newcombe (seeded five) played almost in the dark before going down after two and a half hours of ragged play to the American, R. Holmberg, 9-11, 6-3, 4-6. Fairlie Defeated New Zealand’s young tennis star, B. E. Fairlie, swept into the third round with a fine win over the South African, C. Zeeman, 6-1, 6-2. However, less than three hours later, Fairlie was faced with wily American, M. Riessen. He could not keep up the pace and Riessen beat him in their third-round match, 64, 6-2.
